How to Organise My Garden Shed

Organising our homes is troublesome enough but what about when it comes to our sheds? Old paint tubs, brushes, solvents, power tools, gardening tools and goodness knows what else, can make shed arrangement an arduous task. So for a methodical way to sort through awkwardly-shaped bits and bobs, follow R&J’s tips below and, together, we can make the idea of gardening and DIY in 2020 much more inviting.

Steps that will make your shed neat and tidy

If your New Year’s resolution is to improve your gardening skills, then organising your shed is a great way to motivate yourself.

• Magnetic bar – a space-saving and neat way to keep your saws, hammers, screwdrivers and other tools visible, accessible and uniform. It also prevents injuries caused by storage boxes, as rooting around in boxes full of tools can lead to cuts and loss of fingers!
• Open shelving – there’s only finite space in a shed and, as such, modifying walls with in-built shelves is not the way to go because it will use up too much valuable floor space. What you want to do, is to optimise the space around you; with open shelving, you will be able to make the most of every inch.
• Hanging jar organisers – screws, nails, washers and the rest can be hard to keep together, but when you use hanging jar organisers, you will be able to find what it is you’re looking for almost immediately. To make your very own hanging jar organiser, nail a jar lid to a plank of wood, nail the plank to the bottom of a shelf and carefully screw the jar back to the lid.
• Storage for chemicals – fertilisers, weed killer, pesticides and petrol are toxic and therefore need to be handled responsibly. It’s important to keep these flammable liquids safe and secure, so always keep them in their original packaging, store them together and ensure the shed is well-ventilated.
• Caddies – recycle your old paint cans and use them as useful caddies. Drill two holes into the bottom of clean, old paint cans and use a screw to drill them to the wall. Wrap a hose around the bucket and place paint brushes inside – a great way to keep a tidy shed and make for quick and easy access when performing DIY.
• Wooden pallets – turn the pallet vertically, hammer in some nails and use it as a pegboard to hang scissors, tape, glue guns, gardening trowel, etc.
• Topsoil bin tidies – for half-full soil bags, use bin tidies and labels to maintain the soil’s quality and to prevent it from spilling across the floor.
