Creating a Child-Friendly Garden

Gardens can provide unlimited entertainment for family members of all ages, from providing a relaxing space for adults to sit back and enjoy the summer evenings, to a safe adventure playground for your children to enjoy all year round. When it comes to landscaping your garden, keeping your children’s entertainment and safety in mind is important in ensuring the space can be enjoyed at all times. We’ve listed a few of our top tips to creating a child-friendly garden below.

Zones

IMG_9786It can be difficult to find the balance between creating a garden space that your children enjoy, but also maintaining the picturesque space to relax in when you need some tranquil time to yourself. Creating garden ‘zones’ can be the ideal way around this dilemma, subtly dividing the garden into spaces for both you and children to enjoy – for example, an al fresco eating and dining area can be enjoyed by all the family at the front of the garden, whilst children may enjoy running around a more rugged area at the back of the garden away from the eyes of their parents.

Educational nature

Planting interesting shrubs, flowers and bushes that will attract a variety of wildlife is a great way of transforming your garden into an education haven, allowing your child to experience wildlife and nature first hand. Be wary of planting any toxic plants however, as many common garden plants can be fatal if ingested, including Aconitum, Daphne, Delphinium and other nightshades.

Planting a vegetable garden with the kids is a great way to get them involved.

You could also look into having a vegetable patch installed for a project for both you and the children to enjoy. Plant easy-to-grow vegetables such as lettuce and green beans for a fun and healthy way to enjoy the outdoors. Our skilled teams here at R&J Landscapes provide quality tree planting and design services, helping you create the perfect educational environment for your family garden.

Child friendly surfaces

If you are putting play equipment such as climbing frames or swings in your garden, it’s useful to think about the surface this equipment will go in to make sure your child stays safe whilst playing. Talk to our experienced team when deciding on landscaping plans – we can help to advise what paving may be best suited to your requirements, and where pathways will be best located to keep your child safe on every surface.

Trees & plants

IMG_9794Don’t be tempted to clear away trees and plants to make way for a large lawn for your children – trees and plants can be great ways to include nature in their games. A strong and sturdy tree makes a perfect base for a timeless tyre swing, whilst bushy shrubs provide the perfect hiding places during games.
Make the most of the space

If you don’t have a big enough garden to create multiple spaces for you and the children, focus on making the environment a pleasant and fun place to be for everyone. Installing a storage shed can be perfect for freeing the lawn up from the clutter of bikes and toys, whilst shrubs and trees can provide the perfect game for children, whilst also setting out a beautiful environment for the adults to enjoy too.
